DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide) is an organic compound from the sulfoxide group. It is a natural substance derived from wood pulp. Through oxygen, DMSO is converted into MSM (organic sulfur).

DMSO is a highly polar aprotic organic solvent that is miscible with water. Many compounds that are not directly soluble in water can be dissolved in DMSO to form a concentrated stock solution, which can later be diluted to the desired final concentration in aqueous buffer or culture medium at the time of use.
